How to improve your riding skills: The Canter, part 2

horse_G

Continued from the previous page,
we will talk about the canter in this page too.

It may take some time for the rider to master the canter due to the speed and its unique movements.

If you practice in the group, your horse may canter without you sending aids but following fellow horses.

Of course, it is better if you can control the horse by sending the aids but you can prioritise to getting used to the rhythm at the beginning.

However, you must always control the horse with the reins.

If your club let you practice on one-to-one basis, it will be a good idea to start from the longe, so that you can focus on the balancing without worrying about sending aids and controlling with the reins.

How to improve your riding skills: The Canter, part 2

Practicing the canter in riding circles

Once you understand how to balance and send aids on the canter, let's move on to practicing to get better control of the reins.

As the canter is faster than the walk and trot, it is more difficult to control the horses by the reins.

The good way to practice it is in the riding circles. It is easier said than done. You should always be aware of two things:

  • Where exactly to start the circle
  • Picture the size of the circle on the ground

There are significant differences when you start riding with or without deciding these two things.

Practicing the canter in riding circles

In order to ride in the perfect circle, you need to prepare your horse in advance be ready in a few strides before making a circle.

You need to be aware the characters of each horse; some are easy to make curve and some aren't as easy.

A few strides before making a circle, the inside rein positions the horse's head slightly to the inside shoulder and gives the horse direction and the amount of bend for the size of circle.

The inside leg pushes against the horse and out of the way. The outside leg lies against the horse, which keeps the horse from drifting outward.

Remember that the outside rein plays an important role. The horse must not drift to the outside and make the circle too wide. The outside rein keeps elastic contact to hold the horse straight on course and sustains the balance, free forward movement and keeps the horse from drifting inward.

Once start riding in a circle, practice until you can make a correct circle with the controlled speed.

When the outside hind leg stars drifting outwards, use your outside leg to push it back on the track.

Both horses and riders have preferable side to turn but try to practice on the both side equally.

If the horse starts making a small circle, it drifts inward.

It is the same principal as when you are riding bicycle; the rider needs to place more weight on the inside seat bone if the bicycle drifts outward, or visa versa.

【How to use aids from the reins and legs】

  • Inside rein・・・Continue 'tighten-release' movement to aid the horse to make turn. Keep it light.
  • Outside rein・・・ The outside rein keeps elastic contact, allow space for free forward movement
  • Inside of the rider's leg・・・Keep the leg in the normal position and send aids to run in the controlled speed. At the same time, pushes slightly to change the direction.
  • Outside of the rider's leg・・・The rider applies the outside leg slightly further back from its normal position to control when the horse drifts outwards

To move straight on a curved line the horse's outside back foot travels along the same line as the outside front foot.

Practicing the canter in riding circles

Circles are the easiest and the most difficult shape to ride correctly; the rider required to use the appropriate aids from legs and the reins.

We recommend you to spend good amount of time to spend learning to ride a circle correctly.

Practice the canter without the stirrups

Practice the canter without the stirrups

We mentioned this in the walk and trot sections but it is also effective to practice the canter without the stirrups.

Novices tend to take balance by gripping the horse by their legs, however, the riders cannot send aids if they put too much pressure on your legs to hold their own body. Also it will make the ride uncomfortable.

That's why it is effective to ride the canter without a pair of stirrups. The rider should keep their legs in the same position even without them.

If the legs come forwards, the upper body lean forwards too.

It might be frightening and dangerous. It will be better to work on the longe to start with.

Two-point position

We were talking about the canter in three-point position but there also is a riding method called two-point.

As the illustration below shows, the rider's seat bones are off the saddle in two-point position.

Two-point position

It is easy to stay out of the horse's way and gives the horse the most freedom to use its body.

This position is used for jumping and cross-country, horse trekking or Endurance riding.

Also horse race riders use this two-point position.

It is harder to balance on two-point, we recommend you gradually go faster in speed.

When you practice two-points, please be aware that:

  • Legs stays in the same position
  • Keep the knees soft and relaxed
  • Do not stand on the toe on the stirrups; ensure to pull the heels down. Also don't place the stirrups too deep.
  • Keep your back straight
  • Relax your legs, make sure that you can send aids even on the two-point position
  • Control the angle of your upper body
  • Do not relay on your hands and reins to take a balance
  • Able to use the reins freely even on the two-point position

There will be more points to be aware of but there are the things you need to remember at least to master two-point position.

Effective ways to practice two-point are; light exercise on the horse and stepping over a log.

Novices have tendency to keep the reins too tight to hold themselves but once the riders master how to balance without the reins, it enables the riders to make their hands and legs freely.

Try touching the horse's neck whilst standing on the two-point.

Although you don't really need to use two-points in dressage, it will be useful practice if you are interested in show jumping, Endurance riding or horse trekking.

This is not the easiest position to well-balanced on the horse but you can enjoy more confortable ride than three-point once you mastered it.

Although we introduced some tips to master the canter across two pages, the most important thing is to enjoy the ride.

You may not be always successful but don't forget that fact that you like horse riding to start with.

Keep practicing and you will improve your riding skills and will have more enjoyable time with your horses.
